The Nature of Mark Making: Colour Wash Collages with Maggie Maggio

The Nature of Mark Making: Colour Wash Collages with Maggie Maggio

Maggie Maggio Workshop Colour Wash CollagesCLASS DESCRIPTION

When Maggie started playing with the colour wash technique, she sometimes ended up with large areas of colour that felt much too bare. What did she do? She doodled away the empty spaces. Dots, lines, and patterns filled the voids and transformed a basic colour-washed piece into unique and poetic jewellery or wall hanging.

This two-day workshop combines the basics of Maggie’s signature colour wash technique with an intro to the nature of mark making.

DAY ONE:  You will learn about 21st Century Colour, then mix a natural palette of gorgeous earth colours using Maggie’s Mixing Map. After the intro to Colour-washing, you will make a few “stone” beads to test your colours selections. While curing the beads, Maggie will present a short lesson on the history of pattern design and demonstrate a variety of mark making techniques. The rest of the first day will be spent developing your personal marking style using pen and paper before selecting a few practice beads to embellish with your own instinctive doodles.

DAY TWO: On the second day, you will have some time to create a colour coordinated collection of colour washed polymer sheets and then use them to create a series of small polymer collages with torn and cut sheets. The size and style for your collages is entirely up to you – you can be inspired by landscapes, abstracts, or graphic designs. (Note that small collages can also be worn as brooches or pendants.) Everyone will choose a favourite collage to embellish with customized mark making and then mount their collage into a small frame. Learn how to protect your drawing and how to finish the back and edges of the wall piece before heading home with a personalized work of art to hang on your wall.
