New work in Polymer

When I am not teaching, I work in the studio. Recently, I have decided to do a series of ‘Colours of Australia’ themes in polymer. I have been inspire by colours of the Kimberley coastline. I have focused on the controversial James Price Point where there may be a gas hub installed on this prestine coastline.

I found a photograph that I liked. It shows the vibrant colours of the Kimberley coastline.

Next using Photoshop I chose colours that stood out for me. Next I mixed polymer clays to try and achieve some of those colours and  using some of these colour mixes I made bullseye canes.

Then I made some beads and played with the design of the necklace, stringing the beads together.

Monday 4th April

The world-wide interest in making fingerprint jewellery is really taking off. Many people are keen to set up and run a home business in fingerprint jewellery or they would like to make a personalised jewellery item in polished silver.

In my two day workshop I show people how to transfer fingerprints, a handprint, footprint or child's drawing and onto a piece of pure silver and make into a jewellery item.

On Saturday the 12th, I had a stall at the Capricorn Festival in Yanchep. It was a little crazy in the lead up to the event as I set to work making extra jewellery, banners and displays for the stall. It was a wonderful afternoon with plenty to see and do for all that attended. There were about 50 stalls at the event. It was a great opportunity to make some sales and meet people who were interested in learning more about metal and polymer clays in my workshops.

Cuffs

I have been playing with making cuffs, after making one using canes made in the ‘Polymer Patterns’ workshop on the 8th Feb. The inside of the cuff is lightly textured polymer clay and the outside designs are canes, skinner blends and texture.

I have also been experimenting with electroforming copper onto sculpture themed cuffs. I think it produces a wonderful feature and adds extra interest to the jewellery.

A Week of Workshops

The Metal Clay Art Studio has been busy through February with many students creating some lovely pieces of work.

This is Judy Spence from Melbourne working with silver clay to create a pendant. Judy brought to the class a piece of coral that she found on a beach. She said that she liked the texture and hoped to be able to use it in her work.

Judy tried out the texture first with a piece of scrap polymer clay and it looked great. Then the piece of coral was rolled into the silver metal clay to capture the texture. It was refined with a needle tool and a bail added to the back. This is the pendant after firing and polishing.

More Electroforming

This week I have been experimenting more with this technique. Using a polymer bead, I have incorporated a swarovski crystal into the electroformed copper. The whole process of depositing the copper takes around an hour, sometimes more because I can't help checking the progress!!

I have also been busy preparing for a stall at ART-A-FAIR at Capricorn House in Yanchep this Sunday. Feel free to come and say hello, there will also be fun things for the kids to do and free helicopter rides to promote the area.

Electroforming

I’ve been experimenting with a new piece of equipment. It’s a Sherri Haab Dual Etch and Electroformer. With this unit I can etch my own designs into copper or fine silver and with the electroformer I can encase beads with copper.I can also build a copper texture onto a bead.
